Objective: To understand HIFU research status in the world and its evolution history by investigating related papers indexed by SCIE with bibliometric and visualization methods. Methods: Applying co-occurrence analysis, co-citation analysis, citation analysis and other bibliometric methods, with the use of tools CiteSpace, Bibexcel, Histcite and so on, we studied the growth law of literature, the distribution of journals, nations and regions, authors and bodys, involving disciplines, evolution history and the frontier of the field of HIFU.Results: Totally 909 papers were found. 44 countries and regions, 644 research institutes and 69 subject areas were related to. 8 core journals, 7 key authors and 14 co-operating bodys were gained. HIFU evolved through three periods and 9 theme stages. Conclusion: HIFU is a field in its high-speed developing period and is not yet mature. The most core journal of HIFU field is Ultrasound In Medicine And Biology. United States, France and China became the center the countrys of HIFU research. Washington University, INSERM and Chongqing Medical University are the center institutions in HIFU field. HIFU field has formed a certain scale and stable cooperative bodys of scholars, and has a group of key authors who are advanced in academy, productive in papers and influential on various journals. In addition, HIFU evolved through the early exploration period, recovery and transition period, and clinical promotion period. Engineering became to be the core area in its development process. Coagulation necrosis, prostate tissue, rectal wall, phased array, acoustic power, radical prostatectomy, induced lesions, magnetic resonance imaging, HIFU transducer, prostate specific antigen and local recurrence are the frontiers of HIFU during various periods of the past 21 years.
