Exercise has become popular again among Chinese citizens since the success of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. As people pay more attention to their own health, means of exercises has been diversified, which indicates the arrival of an era of leisure society. Outdoor sports as an emerging style of leisure has been gradually accepted by Chinese citizens, and it has become a common way of exercise chosen by diversified participants, which is due to the fast development of economy and society of China, as well as the promotion of life quality and diversified spiritual life of Chinese citizens. As more and more people participate in sports, they increasingly focus on their fitness, and they prefer to improve the effect and quality of exercise by being closer to natural environment and improving the environment for doing sports. Chinese citizens are appealed to outdoor sports because it combines leisure, entertainment and competition.Tibet autonomous region as an ideal natural venue for outdoor sports attracts much attention from sports-lovers, but the development of outdoor sports in this region still lags. After field study, survey of professionals and participants, as well as interviews with experts, this paper identifies many problems of the development of outdoor sports in this region, including unbalanced development, inappropriate location, relative small-scale of events and lacks of standard services. The reasons behind this can be concluded as a lack of awareness of outdoor sports and industrial development and fuzziness of related policies.Countermeasures proposed to solve these problems include: first, to establish sound and comprehensive policies and regulations to promote positive development of outdoor sports in this region; second, to learn experience from adjacent provinces and to develop outdoor sports which are suitable for this region; third, to elevate the expertise of those who are working in this field by applying the sports philosophies developed in developed regions of China which provide supports to Tibet autonomous region; fourth, to expand the impact of outdoor sports in Tibet autonomous region with the communicating function of new media; fifth, to improve related services; sixth, to make outdoor sports a platform for the promotion of the unique ethnic culture of Tibet autonomous region.
