With the popularity of higher education, the university began to gradually get outof the ivory tower, began to contact the society more frequently and closely, at thesame time, more and more university rankings turn up, developing and grow up.However, many problems appear with our university rankings get widely publicconcern. The most serious problem is the credibility of university rankings, as amatter of fact, the value-orientation is a important element which have a greatinfluence on the university rankings. On account of this, the study starts from thevalue-orientation of university rankings, take it as an important theoretical perspective.Exploring the reason why the credibility of our university rankings is low, andpropose some possible measures to solve the problem.This dissertation firstly studied the background of the theme, review of theliterature, and research methods and innovations. Secondly, I defined the relevantconcepts and theories of the university rankings’ credibility. The credibility ofuniversity rankings is in the informational transmission of the university rankings, theauthority, credibility and influence which built up in the audiences’ mind. Thirdly,analyzing the university ranking institutions different value-orientation——rankingpurposes, ranking index system, ranking method, and focus on the importance ofthose three aspects. Fourthly, I will take the advantage of questionnaires andinterviews to analyzing the current situation of Chinese university rankings’ credibility,and finger out the cause of low credibility. Finally, putting forward somecountermeasures to improve Chinese university rankings: The Chinese universityrankings’ aim should adhere to the multiplex value-orientation, abandoningcommercial purposes; the ranking index system should obey the conformity of lawand the conformity of aim; the technical method of evaluation should be objective andreasonable.
