Comparison Of The Effect To Maintain Oral Health With Three Kinds Of Toothbrushes During Orthodontic Treatment

Background and Objectives:In the orthodontic treatment, how to protect the periodontal tissue ought to catch the eyes of the orthodontists. Generally speaking, fixed orthodontic treatment always takes 2～3 years, during this period, patients who are treated must keep their oral health good enough, in order to prevent gingivitis, periodontitis diseases, or any other similar oral diseases, and to get good effect. There are a lot of different methods to keep oral health, and the most common and easiest one is brushing the teeth. During orthodontic treatment, as the existing of the fixed appliance will bring a lot of discomfort for patients, so choosing a suitable toothbrush becomes significant for patients to keep good oral health.Thus in this study, we compares the effect of three kinds of toothbrushes, V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes, Dual slim soft toothbrushes and General toothbrushes, to maintain orthodontic patients’oral health, aiming at guiding the patients to choose a better toothbrush during their orthodontic treatment.Objects and Methods:Research Object:We select 120 patients under fixed orthodontic treatment in Department of Orthodontics, Stomatological Hospital of Shandong University, during September 2014 to December 2014, who are 12～26 years old(average age is 18.46). The research objects were separated group 1(12～18 years old) from group 2(18.1-26 years old),and then randomly divided into three groups respectively (A1,B1, C1;A2,B2,C2. Every group contained 20 cases).Al and A2 used General tooth brushes, B1 and B2 used Dual slim soft toothbrushes, C1 and C2 used V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes.The research filter conditions are as follows:1、Research objects in each group must use the same kind of toothbrushes (General toothbrushes group:纳爱斯固齿之脉牙刷(corporation:CHINA NICE Group, No:YS011); Dual slim soft toothbrushes group:纳爱斯牙刷倍洁刮苔(corporation:CHINA NICE Group, No:YS101); V-shaped orthodontic tooth brushes group:TOMY Orthocare 2050 ORTHODONTIC V-shaped (corporation: JAPAN TOMY)), toothpaste(佳洁士(Crest)健康专家防蛀修护140g (corporation: AMERICA P&G)), with exactly the same method to brush the teeth(Modified Bass toothbrushing).2、Only patients without any systemic diseases that can influence the periodontal condition can be selected..3、Only patients those did not take any antibiotics and those did not undergo periodontal treatment can be selected.Research methods:All the patients in those three groups must use Modified Bass toothbrushing method, with the same frequency and timepoint to brush the teeth. And when study beginning (after wearing fixed appliances for 2 weeks), after study beginning 2 weeks,4 weeks,6 weeks, patients must come for subsequent visit, in order for us to measure dental plaque index, gingival index and sulcular bleeding index. Results were analyzed using analysis of variance.Results:1、The dental plaque index, gingival index and sulcular bleeding index of the patients in experimental groups using V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes(C1,C2) and Dual slim soft toothbrushes(B1,B2) were much lower than those of patients in control groups using General toothbrushes(A1,A2))(p<0.05), but the differences are not significant.2、Statistical analysis showed that there were no significant difference with the dental plaque index, gingival index and sulcular bleeding index of the patients before and after using General toothbrushes(A1,A2) (p≥0.05).However, those indexes of the patients using V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes(C1,C2) and Dual slim soft toothbrushes(B1,B2) were decreased after the toothbrushing(p<0.05).3、Statistical results also showed that in the patients using V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes(C1,C2), there was no significant difference with the dental plaque index, gingival index and sulcular bleeding index between the C1 group and the C2 group. Meantime, at the 4th week timepoint, the dental plaque index and gingival index reached the lowest level, but at the 6th week both increased slightly.4、By statistical analysis, in the patients using Dual slim soft toothbrushes (B1,B2), there was significant difference with the dental plaque index, gingival index and sulcular bleeding index between the B1 group and the B2 group. All the indexes of the B2 group patients were lower than those of the B1 group. And the sulcular bleeding index of the B2 group patients using Dual slim soft toothbrushes kept reducing start from the beginning of the research to the 6th week.Conclusions:1、In patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment,the oral cleaning effect of those using V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes and Dual slim soft toothbrushes were much better than that of those using General toothbrushes.2、For adult cases, Dual slim soft toothbrushes are much better than V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes,so we recommend Dual slim soft toothbrushes for them.3、For adolescent cases, V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes are much better than Dual slim soft toothbrushes,so we recommend V-shaped orthodontic toothbrushes for them.
