Attitudes And Cognition Of Fuzhou Chinese Adult To Dental Appearance And Need For Orthodontic Treatment.A Cross-sectional Study Based On Index Of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN)

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze subjective orthodontic treatmentneed of Fuzhou Chinese adult. Their attitudes to dental appearance and their demandto orthodontic treatment were also analyzed. Describe thoughts and values influencingyoung adults'opinions of their own orthodontic treatment need with orthodontist'sassessment of treatment need.Methods: The material consisted of study casts and questionnaires collectedfrom 106 adult patients and 196 colleague students of Fuzhou city Fujian province.The need for orthodontic treatment needs and questionnaires were used in assessingdemand for orthodontic treatment.Results: The results indicate that 15% of the adult patients had little need oforthodontic treatment (Grade 2), 42% moderate need (Grade 3), 32% great need(Grade 4), and 11% of adult had very great need for orthodontic treatment need(Grade 5). Nearly two thirds of the adult patients had orthodontic treatment in the end.A definite relationship was found between the score of DHC and negativeself-appraisal of dental appearance with decision for orthodontic treatment.The results also indicate that 17% of the colleague students had noneed of orthodontic treatment, 35% had little need (Grade 2), 31% moderate need(Grade 3), 17% great need (Grade 4), and 4% of the colleague students had very greatneed for orthodontic treatment (Grade 5).21.5% of the colleague students were notsatisfied with their dental appearance, about 87%would like to have orthodontictreatment. A definite relationship was found between the score of DHC and negativeself-appraisal of dental appearance with demand for orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: The study demonstrates the subject need of orthodontic treatmentamong Fuzhou Chinese adult is high but the objective demand of orthodontic relativelow. The lay adult's awareness of orthodontics treatment agrees not well with theorthodontist assessment of treatment need. The DHC used together with the AC ofIOTN seems to give valuable information and to be of importance in the discussion oforthodontic treatment need.
