Objective:To investigate the therapeutic effect of scalp-nape acupuncture on vascular dementia (VD)Methods:Ninety vascular dementia patients were randomly allocated into two groups, with 30 cases in the treatment group receiving combined scalp and nape acupuncture treatment and 30 cases in the control group receiving routine acupuncture. The intervention was given for 8 weeks in total. Evaluation was made using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Activities of Daily living (ADL) and Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale -cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) and the Scale for the Differentiation of Syndromes of vaseular Dementia (SDSVD) before and after treatment. Results:After 8-week treatment, compared with pre-treatment,the MMSE and ADL evaluation detected significant changes in the two groups (P<0.05). The MMSE evaluation showed that the total efficacy rate was higher in the scalp-nape acupuncture group than in the routine acupuncture group of vascular dementia patients (P<0.05). The total efficacy rate was 80.00% in the treatment group versus 60.00% in the control group. The ADL evaluation showed that the total efficacy rate higher in the scalp-nape acupuncture group than in the routine acupuncture group of vascular dementia (P<0.05). The total efficacy rate was 86.67% in the treatment group versus 63.33% in the control group. The ADAS-cog evaluation showed that the total efficacy rate was higher in the scalp-nape acupuncture group than in the routine acupuncture group of vascular dementia patients (P<0.05). The total efficacy rate was 83.33% in the treatment group versus 56.67% in the control group. The SDSVD evaluation showed that the total efficacy rate was higher in the scalp-nape acupuncture group than in the routine acupuncture group of vascular dementia patients (P<0.05). The total efficacy rate was 90.00% in the treatment group versus 63.33% in the control group. Conclusions:Acupuncture is effective in treating vascular dementia and combined scalp and nape acupuncture can achieve even better effects.
