With the development of medical technology and living standards improving, the proportion of the elderly population continues rising, the morbidity of chronic disease and the number of patients continue rising, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and it’s a challenge to existing medical technology. And stem cells bring hope for these patients. Over the past decade, there is some progress in stem cells. But, overall, stem cells technology is not mature enough, mainly in the preclinical research stage, partially in the clinical trial stage, and there are three kinds of stem cells drugs and five kinds of non-drug products in market. Compared with Japan and South Korea and other major scientific and technological countries, the progress of stem cell research is slow in China, lack of policy support, few major output of scientific research. It is important for stem cells research to making a systematic survey on the preclinical research of stem cells, finding the problems and formulating relevant measures.1. PurposeThrough the systematic research on scientific research, talent echelon, team building, cognition of ethical norms of stem cells preclinical research teams, we want to discover the problems, talent team building, institutional deficiencies in the specification, make some suggestions and provide reference for the relevant departments to making policies to promoting the development of stem cells preclinical research, further research and transformation of achievements2. Materials and MethodsResearch objects come from Peking Union Medical College, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, the Second Military Medical University, Zhejiang University, a total of 13 units,46 project teams and 248 researchers, including 8 project teams in Beijing,16 project teams in Shanghai,20 project teams in Guangzhou,2 project teams in Hangzhou, which can represent the level of stem cells preclinical research in China. We investigated talent echelon construction, scientific research, international exchange of information, building cognition, cognition of the relevant ethics policy and so on, through questionnaire. This paper adopts descriptive analysis, X 2 test, T test, logistic multivariate analysis, making the choice of single factor before multivariate analysis, variables P≤0.1 as potentially relevant variables. We used SPSS 13.0 to achieve data analysis, P<0.05 considered statistically significant.3. ResultsWe made a survey on the 46 project teams of stem cells preclinical teams and 248 researchers, which can represent the level of stem cells preclinical research in China and made depth discussions with the relevant experts. The results show that we have made some progress in experiment platform construction of stem cells preclinical research and 82.3% of the project teams rely on the laboratory of provincial level or above. The whole level of the project teams’leaders has been improved for talents cultivation and introduction. The talent echelon is not reasonable, lacking high qualification researchers, junior staff uneven distribution, lacking senior researchers, compared with American Universities lacking PHD.60.9% of the project teams had introduced talents from abroad and researchers attend related international conferences more frequently from 2009 to 2013. There is a good working relationship with other units. The quantity and quality of SCI papers, the number of funds and the number of patents were rising from 2009 to 2013, but there are a lot of gaps, compared with America lacking funding sources. As the management system is not perfect, lack of scientific research funding, stem cells research has been slow. Respondents believe that human resources and capital investment are the main factors affecting the development of the project teams and are satisfied with cooperation. Gender, resource allocation, talent echelon construction, and cooperation with enterprises are major factors for confidence of researchers in transformation of achievements. Researchers know not so much about stem cells related ethical norms and management system needs further improvement. Working hours in project team, professional title, cooperation with enterprises and confidence of researchers in transformation of achievements are the factors on the level of understanding of the stem cells policies. Experts also believe that management system is not perfect, the single funding sources, hindering the stem cells research.4. Conclusions and suggestionsAlthough we have made some achievements in stem cells preclinical research, compared with America and other developed countries, there are some gaps. In order to promoting stem cells research, leading the world development trend, we should continue to strengthen experimental platform construction, tamp experimental foundation; adhere the people-oriented principle, take attention to personnel training and introduction, allocate talent reasonably, optimize talent structure; strengthen international and domestic academic exchanges and cooperation; improve research system, expand research funding sources, increase efficiency and level of scientific research, build cooperation platform and improve the regulatory system.
