In this issue, the retrospective studies are used to evaluate both regular ultrasonography and auto ultrasonic volume scan in the diagnosis of the hernia and to find out different diagnostic advantages of various hernia between regular ultrasonography and auto ultrasonic volume scan.Part one:The purpose of the study is to evaluate the use of ultrasonography before and after inguinal tension-free hernioplasty. Methods:Thirty patients,32cases, submitted to tension-free inguinal hernioplasty were studied by ultrasonography before and one mother after surgical intervention. Ultrasonography revealed the character of the hernia before the surgery and observed the situation of the mesh after the surgery. Results:In all diagnostic ultrasound results, we found20inguinal hernias,4direct hernias,3femoral hernias which were the same as the surgical founding. We identified2seroma,1recurrence of hernia and1folding mesh after hernia repair. Conclusion:Ultrasonography is a useful means of preoperative assessing in inguinal hernia and demonstrating postoperative complications associated with mesh.Part two:The purpose of the study is to evaluate the use of auto ultrasonic volume scan in the diagnostic classification of the hernia. Methods:62suspected cases were submitted to auto ultrasonic volume scan (AUVS) before the tension-free hernioplasty. Through by the images of any sections (transverse, sagittal, coronal) in AUVS, we could make a diagnosis and classification of the hernia after observing the hernia ring position, the hernia sac, the hernia contents and three-dimensional structure of the area to be checked. And then the classification should be compared with the surgical finding. Results:By the means of AUVS, the diagnostic accuracy is not only higher in incisional hernia than that in inguinal hernia, but also higher in irreducible inguinal hernia than that in reducible inguinal hernia. Conclusion:Based on the traditional two-dimensional ultrasound, AUVS upgrades the coronal image which provides the clinicians with objective three-dimensional image datas. Therefore, AUVS has the advantage over the traditional ultrasound in the diagnostic classification of the hernia, especially for the incisional hernia and the irreducible inguinal hernia. Part three:Compared the value of ultrasonic volume auto-scan and regular ultrasonography in the diagnosis of various hernias, the purpose of the clinic study is to find out the advantage of both two imaging examinations. Methods:83suspected cases were submitted to ultrasonic volume auto-scan (UVAS) and regular ultrasonography before the tension-free hernioplasty. By the images, we could make a diagnosis and classification of the hernia through observing the hernia ring position, the hernia sac, the hernia contents and three-dimensional structure of the area to be checked. And then the classification should be compared with the surgical finding. Results:The diagnostic accuracy of incisional hernia and irreducible inguinal hernia is higher in UVAS group than that in regular ultrasonography group. Conclusions:UVAS has the advantage over regular ultrasonography in the diagnostic classification of the hernia, especially for the incisional hernia and the irreducible inguinal hernia.
