Since entering the21st century,with the development of Industrialization,Informatization, Urbanization, Marketization and Globalization,spatial structure ofeconomic development has had significant changes from the rural industrializationand the county economy leading regional development to the City Economy andMetropolitan Economy in Yangtze River Delta. The status and proportion ofmetropolitan economy which core is Shanghai, Nanjing and Hang Zhou is risingrapidly in the Yangtze River Delta. The Metropolitan Economy has become thestrongest comprehensive strength and fastest new growth pole. Therefore, we shouldreconsider the future urbanization road of the Yangtze River Delta from theperspective of Metropolitan Area. By constructing a more reasonable metropolitaneconomy, the Yangtze River Delta will become a world-class metropolitan area withstronger international competitiveness.Combining the regional spatial structure theory, new economic geographytheory,industrial agglomeration theory, drawing principles and concepts of regionaldivision labor, regionalism and overall plan, we use the method of combiningqualitative and quantitative analysis. Through analyzing accumulated experiences andexisting problems in recent years, we explore mechanisms and paths of MetropolitanEconomy in the Yangtze River Delta. The paper elaborates mainly from two aspects.On the one hand, by analyzing the present situation of economic development, wereveal inner mechanisms of economic increasing, the new trends and the existingmain problems in the Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan Area. On the other hand, westudy the spatial structure and function orientation of Metropolitan Area, put forwardthe basic thoughts and policy suggestions to construct the Metropolitan Economy.The paper comes to four main conclusions as follows:Firstly, Metropolitan Area is the performance of the regional economicdevelopment in the spatial structure and evolved development form of urbaneconomic. Market scale expansion, enterprise to pursuit scale economy, the industrialcluster effect and urban agglomeration effect are the four inner powers, whichpromote economic development of the Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan Arearapidly in a long time.Secondly, some new trends take place in the Yangtze River Delta MetropolitanArea, for example, the status of urban economy promote rapidly,urbanization level continue to improve,urban integration has become evident increasingly, cities arespreading from concentration into multi-center diffusion. However, some deeperproblems are existing in this area, for example, the region internal economydevelopment imbalance, Modern service industry development insufficient,spatialagglomeration level ascending slowly, the same Industrial and urban functionconvergence coexisting.Thirdly, to build a world-class metropolitan circle with stronger internationalcompetitiveness, we should change its orientation of spatial structure from a densetown area to urban belt, from point-shaft to network development, from many centerto Metropolitan circle.Finally, we should work hard from many aspects to build the Yangtze RiverDelta Metropolitan Area. Choosing reasonable spread model is to improve its spatialstructure. To promote economic and society coordination, we should evacuatefunctions of the city. Establishing a new urban function system makes cities’complementary functions. Making traffic system more efficient and faster shortens thedistance of time and space. Shaping a clear division of labor in the industry chainsupgrades industrial competitiveness in the world.
