In recent years, social networking sites’ unstoppable rage has become one of themost important phenomenon of the national network sector. The social network sites,like the Facebook, Myspace, Twitter in the foreign countries, as well asRenren(formerly Xiaonei), Kaixin and other domestic network has risen rapidly, andthe number of the users of the social networking sites is growing more and more.Unlike web1.0, which has a new type of network environment, the web2.0has adistinctive characteristics on the individual centralized and micro-content.Accompanied with the web2.0network era, the blog (BLOG), SNS and other networkapplications has been known and applied increasingly. Social networking sites provideall kinds of interactive online services, integration features of the BBS, instantmessaging, blog, online-games, videos, music and other network services. In this way,the individual can take full advantage of network technology self-informationpresentation and social interaction.This dissertation studies students in Huazhong University of Science andTechnology, and bases on the impression management theory. In the basis of theimpression management theory, the theory of self-monitoring, and other relatedconceptions and operational definitions, I took the preparation of the questionnaire,and completed the research through questionnaire and interview. In this way to studythe self-image rendering of the college students in the social networking sites.Impression management means that, in the daily lives, people get the meaning andpurpose in the attempt of interactive process, and try to make good impression orchange their original impression through their own individual efforts. Self-monitoringtheory means the individuals control and restrain their own behavior through theobservation of the social environment. At present, the social networking sites provide avirtualization place of impression management for college students. The collegestudents can take their impression management base on the social networkenvironment and according to the evaluation of the attitudes of others in thenetworking sites. The questionnaire use a7-point scale, which is divided into four aspects,including the basic survey of Internet using of college students, self-monitoring scale,the application of initiative impression management strategy and defensive impressionmanagement strategies. In addition to this, the questionnaire is selected randomly toHuazhong University of Science and Technology students, which coversundergraduates and graduate students, as well as fresh graduates.After data acquisition and SPSS16.0statistical software analysis, the study findsthat, there are significant differences in the use of the defense strategy and proactivestrartegy according to the different grades and the length of time of visiting socialnetworking sites.The higher of the degree of self-control, self-monitoring of thecollege students own, the more likely they will adopt proactive strategy. In addition tothe first two points, the college students use initiative impression management tacticsmore than they use defensive impression management tactics.The significance of this study lies in several aspects. The first and the mostimportant is that, using the impression management theory, the theory ofself-monitoring and through empirical research, which can get more information aboutthe college students of impression management in social networking sites. Additionally,which can also rich the impression management applications, and not be limited tosuch as job candidates and so on. Secondly, at the same time, through the analysis ofthe survey questionnaire, draw conclusions, all of these can provide a researching basicfor the further analysis of psychological and self-image rendering of the collegestudents. And the last significant is that, through this research, which can get apreliminary understanding of today’s college students in the managing of self-impression.
