ObjectiveTo explore the value of tongue image in the evaluation of childhood pneumoniaand provide the clue of diagnosis and treatment effect on childhood pneumonia byobserving the variance of tongue image in different periods on the children whosediagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine met the wind-heat disturbing lung syndromeand comparing the clinical evaluation significance between tongue image andtemperature, cough and rales.MethodsIn this prospective study, the children being included were admitted in therespiratory department of dalian children’s hospital between oct.2011and jan.2012,whose diagnosis met both the western and traditional Chinese medicine criteria ofchildhood pneumonia, and only the wind-heat disturbing lung syndrome cases wereselected. The indicators of tongue image and rales were collected by both manual andthe instruments (tongue image instrument and electronic stethoscope), all the indicatorswere recorded in a given table.Results1. The main tongue image of wind-heat disturbing lung syndrome of childhoodpneumonia presents as red texture in tongue tip and thin, yellow mixed with whitecoating in the first day of admission, the percentage is40.8%. The main color of tonguetexture is red and mainly in the location of tongue tip, the percentage is75.5%. Themain color of tongue coating is yellow mixed with white, the percentage is65.3%. Themain tongue coating texture is69.4%.2. In the first admission day,95.9%children with wind-heat disturbing lungsyndrome presents abnormal tongue image,4.1%children presents normal tongueimage, in the seventh admission day,36.7%children with wind-heat disturbing lung syndrome presents abnormal tongue image,63.3%children presents normal tongueimage, comparing the tongue image in different admission day by chi square, P<0.05,the statistical difference is significant.3. As the state of pneumonia children turns better, the percentage of the abnormaltongue image trends to decline, and the normal one trends to elevate.4. As the state of pneumonia children turns better, the clinical manifestationsincluding temperature, cough and rales turns to be normal.5. In the evaluation process of wind-heat disturbing lung syndrome of childhoodpneumonia, the tongue image and temperature and rales function differently, comparingthe tongue image with temperature and rales by chi square, P<0.05,the statisticaldifference is significant. In the evaluation process of wind-heat disturbing lungsyndrome of childhood pneumonia, the tongue image and cough function not differently,Comparing the tongue image with cough by chi square, P>0.05, the statisticaldifference is not significant.Conclusions1. The main tongue image of wind-heat disturbing lung syndrome of childhoodpneumonia in the first admission day presents as red texture in the tongue tip, thin andyellow mixed with white coating.2. In the first admission day, the tongue image of wind-heat disturbing lungsyndrome of childhood pneumonia presents mainly as abnormal, while in the seventhadmission day, the tongue image presents mainly as normal, comparing it in the first andseventh admission day, the tongue image presents differently, it indicates that asadmission day prolongs and the children’s state turns better the tongue image turnsnormal from abnormal and some variance trends shows.3. The tongue image, temperature, cough and rales function separately in theevaluation process of wind-heat disturbing lung syndrome of childhood pneumonia, comparing with temperature and rales, the tongue image is more sensitive, whilecomparing with cough, the sensitiveness shows no difference.
