Objective To investigate the level of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone inperipheral blood and the expression of estrogen receptor、progesterone receptor andandrogen receptor in varicose veins, and their relationships with clinical stages.Methods51patients(59limbs) with simple and primary varicose veins were selected, who were diagnosed by color Doppler ultrasound or other examination.15healthysubjects were served as control. The levels of sex hormone were measured byradioimmunoassay and the expression of ER、 PR and AR was examined byimmunohistochemical SP stain in both group. T-test,chi square test was used forstatistical analysis.Results1. The E2value in peripheral blood of varicose veins patients in male was significantlyhigher than that in controls(P<0.05). but there is no significant difference of P and Tvalue between varicose veins patients and that in controls (P>0.05).2. The E2value in peripheral blood of varicose veins patients in menopausal womenwas significantly higher than that in controls(P<0.05). but there is no significantdifference of P and T value between varicose veins patients and that in controls(P>0.05).3. The expression of ER、PR、AR is not detected both in the normal vein and varicosevein. ConclusionThe E2value in peripheral blood of varicose veins patients in male and menopausalwomen is significantly higher than that in controls(P<0.05).The expression of ER、PR、AR is not detected both in the normal vein and varicose vein. The results indicate thatmaybe estrogen participate in the pathological process of varicose veins.
