10G-EPON and WDM-PON are representative in the development and evolution of next-generation Passive Optical Network (NG-PON).10G-EPON is upgraded on1G-EPON and has an established standardization. And WDM-PON is regarded as the optimal mode of optical access network. But the communication distance and bandwidth of upstream limit the development of WDM-PON. Moreover, the research on MAC layer is resultless. So WDM-PON based on10G-EPON is worth studying significantly. There are3contentions to be discussed in the paper:(1)Compared and analyzed the system performance when RZ code, IRZ code or PPM code was used in downstream in long-reach WDM-PON based on wavelength re-modulation. In order to extend the communication distance, some measures needed to be taken to reduce the distraction of backward Rayleigh Scattering, aside from the impact of loss and dispersion. It was helpful to improve the transmission performance of upstream using these high energy efficiency On-Off codes.(2)Described the improvement of frame structure between10G Ethernet and1G Ethernet. Designed and implemented the packaging and unpackaging process of10G-EPON MAC data frame in FPGA. Made an exploratory analysis on data frame of WDM-PON MAC layer compared with10G-EPON.(3)Focused on the design and implementation of10G-EPON physical code sublayer in FPGA. According to IEEE802.3av standard, the bandwidth adaptive modules,64B/66B encode/decode modules, scrambler/descrambler modules, gearbox modules and synchronization modules were designed respectively. And then these modules were integrated followed the "top-down" rules. By timing analysis and real-time observation, the results of timing simulation and the analysis conclusion of hardware implementation were given at last.
