Waike Baixiao Quanshu was written by Gong Juzhong, a famous doctor who lived in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. Information about the book and its author, which was too simple and ambiguous, fragmented in many kinds of reference books. There is no systematic study on this topic so far. Based on reviewing the existing related information, this paper studies the author’s life experience and the book’s version, especially the origin of the content, the characteristics and the value and so on. In addition, the paper makes some new understanding in the following aspects.(1) The author’s life and his ZiHao. This paper clarifies the mistakes about Gong’s ZiHao, discusses Gong’s born year and his age and introduces his friends Yu Longde, Liu Kongdun and Deng Zhimo.(2) The existing version and the systematic origin. This paper ascertains that the number of the book’s existing edition is15, which corrects the view of17kinds in Zhongguo Zhongyi Guji Zongmu. It makes volumes of the book clear. Both four-volume edition and six-volume edition have spread. Then it divides4edition systems, making clear the origin and development relations between the existing editions.(3) The academic origin and content characteristics. This paper investigates the academic origin of the book, clarifies the source of its content and images, makes definitely the origin and development relations among Dou Taishi Chuangyang Jingyan Quanshu, Michuan Waike Fang, Yixue Rumen and Waike Baixiao Quanshu. Combining the social economic background of the middle-late Ming dynasty with Gong’s personal factors, this paper analyzes the writing reasons of the book.
