Objective:To explore the effect of wind-expelling and vertigo-checking Qufengdingxuan decoction on syndrome of wind phlegm of acute vertiginous attacks in vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) patients in the hope of optimize the protocol of Chinese traditional treatment, which is insuffiently investigated in terms of syndrome differentiation and treatment at present.Methods:278VBI patients with acute vertiginous attacks dignosed as syndrome of wind phlegm according to the national diagnostic criteria of Chinese medicine were randomized to treatment group (group A) and control group (group B). On top of previous medication, group A was given Qufengdingxuan decoction, group B Flunarizine for one week. The scores in terms of vertigo, major concomitant symptoms, ann TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) syndrome were observed at day0,1,3and7. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and electrocardiogram (ECG), routine blood, urine, and stool tests, and test of liver and renal were performed at day0and7.Results:(1) the rate of clinical control and marked relief of vertigo, major concomitant symptoms, and the TCM syndrome in group A was higer than group B with significant difference (P<0.01or P<0.05).(2) there is no significant difference regarding blood flow velocity of the basilar artery and both vertebral arteries between the2goups (P>0.05).(3) the value of routine blood, urine, and stool tests and test of liver and renal were normal before and after treatment. Conclusions:Qufengdingxuan decoction is an efficient and safe prescription in treating syndrome of wind phlegm of acute vertebrobasilar insufficiency vertigo.
