Seng shen fang(Prescription book of Monk Shen), also called Seng shen yao fang,Seng shen ji fang or Shen shi fang,Written by Monk shen,is a medical encyclopaedia compiled in the southern and Northern Dynasties and was prevalent in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. This book containd various subjects including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology and paediatrics, especially the part of beriberi was deeply valued by later doctors. This paper choose Monk shen, who was skilled in treating beriberi and his work Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) as the research object, collecting both Chinese and Japanese medical literatures related to Monk shen and Seng shen ji jang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen), analyzing and discussing the completion time of Monk shen ’s works and his dates of birth and death, life time and medical characteristics as well as the features of Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk shen), also reflecting some profiles of Sino-Japanese medical exchange from the cognition of beriberi in various stages of Chinese and Japanese.Textual research on the completion time of Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen)Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) was firstly recorded in Sui shu jing ji zhi,the completion time and style of which indicated that Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) originated from QI lu.But the author of this paper concluded that QI lu haven’t recorded Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) because Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) haven’t mark the characters of "Liang You","Liang You You" and "You" etc under the articles of "Fan Dong Yang"f Sui shu jing ji zhi.In other words,Ruan xiao-xu(479-536) of Liang Dynasty haven’t seen Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) which ought to be completed after the year of536.Also by making textual reseach on the facts that Wai tai mi yao fang (Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library) and Yi xin fang (Prescription Book of Heart of Medicine) transcribed the characters as "grow hair ointment of Emperor Wen of Wei" from Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen),we can conclude that Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) was completed after the year of540. Later by the textual reseach work of Japanese doctor of lji keigen.the name of beriberi firstly appeared in the period of Emperor Wu of Liang (502-549) and was unified used in Zhu bing yuan hou lun(General Treatise on Causes and Manifestations of All Diseases),which conclude that Seng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen) ought to be completed before the year of610. Textual research on Monk shen’s dates of birth and deathBy analyzing the introduction of Monk shen in volume seven of wind-toxin beriberi of Qicm jin fang (Invaluable Prescriptions for Ready Reference),we find that Sun simiao didn’t clealy pointed out that Monk shen was living in Liu Song period.but contrastly explained that beriberi was pandemic in the region of southern dynasty in the living period of Monk shen through the method of rhetoric. Consulting that Wai tai mi yao fang (Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library) regarded shen shi as modern people in the preface and compared to Zhen quan and Sun si-miao,we believe that the life-time of Monk Shen was not too long away from that of Wang tao as well as Sun si-miao.Ben cao gang mu (Compendium of Materia Medica)also clealy pointed that Monk shen was Mei shi, but Gu jin yi tong da quan introduced that Mei shi was a monk of Guangling living in the Sui Dynasty. Combining this with the above textual research,we can conclude that:Monk shen is a Buddhism physician living through the dynasties of Liang,Chen and Sui but mainly in the Sui dynasty.medical characteristics and achievements of Monk shenSeng shen ji fang(Collective Prescription Book of Monk Shen),a medical encyclopaedia involve principle-method-recipe-medicines,the greatest characteristic of which is to classifying diseases by the cause and location.Monk shen was skilled in internal medicine.surgery, gynecology and paediatrics and was an ordinary Buddhism physician living in the lower level of society. He can deeply experienced the sufferings and difficulties of the people underclass. As a result.Ⅱis medical medical characteristic is good at using Empirical formulas for treatmentBeriberi treatment characteristics of Monk shenMonk shen treating beriberi by the classification of clinical syndromes according to the stages of the disease. In the early stage of the disease,He selected the Da xiao xu ming and Yue bi jia zhu decotion. There were three pattens in extreme stage:syndrome of heat transformed from wind-cold,using three decotions of bamboo sap in orders;syndrome of wind-cold entering into heart, applying four decotions of ephedra in orders;syndrome of miasma-toxin in South of the Five Ridges, using three decotions of rhinoceros horn.In the later stage of complicated symptons, using the drugs by syndrome differentiation according to the various clinical symptons.Because of the recurrence of beriberi.Monk shen usually took precautions against the disease by using pills, powders and ointments.Monk shen’s main achievements in treating beriberi is to summarize the treating experiences of the predecessor, perfect the treating methods and make the first big clinical summarization to syndrome differentiation and treatment as well as prescriptions and remedies before the Sui Dynasty.
