Objectives1. To analyze nurses’ knowledge level and attitude toward pain management and their learning needs about pain knowledge, providing the reference for design pain training program.2. To evaluate the effects of pain training program on nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward pain management and patient outcomes.Methods1. Design pain training program: Using purposive sampling, selecting117nurses and82patients from one level3comprehensive teaching hospital as the objects of study, we used survey approach to collect information from nurses about their knowledge and attitude regarding pain management and their learning needs. At the same time, we collected patients about pain scores and satisfactions using the same approach. Based on the survey and pain nursing teaching materials, we designed pain training program.2. Intervention: Nurses received pain knowledge training by giving lectures and group activities, we trained nurses once a week, altogether4weeks (8classes in all), training content including pain knowledge, pain assessment, therapy and nursing, analgesic knowledge, clinical pain case analysis.3. Evaluation:The study was quasi-experimental in design (pretest-posttest). Therefore, we used the same research instruments and approachs to collect nurses and patients materials after the training program. Then, we compared the data with data before training. Evaluated nurses pain management knowledge and attitude regarding pain management scores, patients pain scores and patients satisfaction. The data was analyzed using statistical software SPSS13.0, statistical methods included descriptive statistics, t test and chi square test, nonparametric tests.Results1. The survey of nurses’knowledge and attitude regarding pain management before trainingThe survey including demographics and nurses’knowledge and attitude survey regarding pain-2008version(NKASRP)was completed by117nurses before training,109valid questionnaires(93.16%)was analyzed. The nurses mean scores was17.40among the40scores; the correct answer rate, on average, was43.62%. According to the testing purpose was divided into four dimensions:the average correct rate was54.22%on pain general knowledge,50.50%on pain assessment,43.50%on analgesic knowledge and comprehensive application part was11.50%. Meanwhile,The survey of learning needs about pain knowledge showed that96.33%of nurses needed to learn pain related knowledge, and wanted to get knowledge about pain assessment, drug therapy and pain related psychology knowledge. Therefore, the survey revealed the nurses’deficits on knowledge and attitude, the results showed that nurses need to strengthen pain training.2.The NKASRP scores before and after pain training programWe distributed101questionnaires to nurses after pain training program,98valid questionnaires. The NKASRP mean score was23.79, the correct answer rate was59.48%, and there is a obviously rise of four dimensions scores. The t-tests showed statistically significant difference in mean scores and each dimension scores(P<0.05). It demonstrated pain training program can increase nurses’scores in pain knowledge and attitude.3. Patients’outcomes before and after pain training programThe results showed that all the patients experienced some degree of pain, and the change of pain scores were no statistically significant difference in two stages (P>0.05). But results showed that the satisfaction with pain relief, nursing, the response speed of nurses and education about pain management were statistically significant difference(P<0.05).Conclusions1.Nurses are lack of pain knowledge and have negative attitudes toward pain management.2.The pain training program can improve nurses’knowledge and attitude regarding pain management. It is effective in changing nurses’knowledge, attitude and pain assessment practice.3.After the pain training program, patients’satisfaction with pain relief, nursing, the response speed of nurses and education about pain management improve obviously. But patients’pain scores aren’t change significantly.
