ObjectiveTo investigate the implementation of the surgical safety checklist in560cases underwent selective surgery in a upper first-class hospital.MethodsThe compliance and awareness of content of the surgical safety checklist were involved in all respondents that included surgeon, surgical assistant, scrub nurse and anesthetists.The survey was divided into three parts. First, when the patient was delivered into the operating room, the patient’s identity, surgical site, surgical procedure and consent were confirmed before induction of anesthesia. Second, the patient’s identity, procedure and incision site was confirmed further before the skin incision was made. Antibiotic prophylaxis given within the last60minutes, anticipated critical events, sterility included indicator results, equipment issues and essential imaging displayed were also asked. Last, before patient leaved operating room, the name of the procedure, completion of instrument, sponge and needle counts, specimen labeling, the key concerns for recovery and management of this patient were asked respectively. Resultsthere are still different levels of poor compliance and unawareness of all items of surgical safety checklist in surgical team members. The patients’ quality and safety can be improved by the implementation of the surgical safety checklist.Conclusionthe implementation of the surgical safety checklist can be feasible and effective to subject them to significant risk of potentially avoidable harm in selective operation. It’s important to promote communication among the surgical team and may help to prevent a number of surgical errors.
