As the rapid development of the Internet, network traffic and communication demand has increased dramatically, and then bring fast change of network technology. Routing and forwarding equipment, as the major networking equipment of internet, its performance is closely related to network communication quality, the high-end high-performance router is pressing needed for service provider, large enterprises, government departments etc. The forwarding processing technology is the most important influence factor of network performance and cost, and the packet forwarding performance is the most basic characteristics and the key characteristics of high-end router, so the fast forwarding technology to router data plane becomes a researching hotspot for network equipment. Network processor, as a the symbol of fifth generation router, not only inherited the advantages of RISC and ASIC layered thoughts, but also has strong programmable flexibility and data processing ability, it has become one of the hotspot technologies of high-performance networking equipment research.This thesis based on the third generation network processor of EZchip Company, launches the data forwarding research and implementation for high-performance router. On the base of studying in detail on the network processor, the thesis shows its characteristics and advantages for the data network equipment design, then using the processor design and realizes the function of data forwarding plane, referring to the high performance router's characteristic, the design focuses on fast packet forwarding, achieving the rate of one port 10Gbps line-speed and two-way 5Gbps wire-speed flow management. For simplified design and verification consideration, the thesis just extracts some representative business of the data forwarding plane for realization. Specifically, realizing the second and the third layer data forwarding business of the OSI seven layers network model, the second layer's business containing unicast, multicast, flooding and learning, main content is STP, QinQ, VLAN, port aggregation and fast packet copy, etc.; The third layer's business containing unicast and multicast, main content includes the rapidly router table searching, RPF detection, quickly packet copy, etc.. Based on the above realization, using the NP's TM module realize the layered flow management and mirroring, in order to achieve the purpose of preliminary flow supervision, packet filtering, the adjustment and monitoring to emergency data flow, through the corresponding rules.Finally, for the real network, using the specialized tools finish the test verification. Test results show that the router based on the network processor has high performance, especially for data forwarding plane, it can achieve high-speed forwarding, also possesses greatly strengthened flexibility and flow management capability, so it can meet various complicated application needs greatly and has important practical significance.
