ObjectiveTo investigate and analyze the prevalence characteristic of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its relationship with cardiocerebrovascular disease among in-service and retired staff in an aerospace enterprise and to provide evidence for MS treatment and prevention among population in the enterprise.MethodsMedical examination data of in-service and retired staff in an aerospace enterprise were used to analyze the prevalence of MS. The diagnosis of MS was based on MS diagnosis standard of China Diabetes Society (CDS). SPSS 17.0 were used for data cleaning and statistical analyses. Prevalence characteristics of MS in 2006 were examined. Based on the data of year 2006, a two-year retrospective investigation was conducted for people aged 30 years and above without cardiocerebrovascular disease. Data of year 2008 were used to examine the relationship between MS and cardiocerebrovascular disease.Results1. Overall,6364 subjects (mean age 50.6±16.7 years) were included in the analysis, accounting for 93.1% of the total population in the enterprise. The rude prevalence rate of MS was 11.6% (12.8% for males and 9.9% for females). The standardized prevalence rate was 8.1% (10.2% for males and 5.3% for females). The prevalence rate increased with age, particularly in age group 40-49 years for males and 50-59 years for females.2. The prevalence rate of overweight or obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and impaired fasting glucose was 31.2%,39.5%,28.4%, and 21.8% respectively. It was higher in males than in females. The rate was increasing with age for hypertension and impaired fasting glucose, while the rate of overweight or obesity and dyslipidemia showed a different tendency for males.3. The MS related disease(s) was ranked based on the number of the diseases from o to 4. The proportion with 0,1,2,3, and 4 MS related disease(s) among males was 33.2%,31.1%,22.9%,10.8%, and 2.0%, respectively. Among females, it was 45.2%, 27.8%,17.1%,8.1%, and 1.8%, respectively. 4. MS is a risk factor for cardiocerebrovascular disease. The risk of people 30 years old and above with MS increased 2-4 times within 2 years in comparison with those without MS.5. The risk of cardiocerebrovascular disease increased with the number of MS related disease(s). The correlation coefficient was 0.085 (p<0.001). The risk for people aged 55 years old and above with MS increased 3-5 times compared with healthy people and twice compared with high risk population. For high risk people aged 65 years old and above, the risk doubled compared with healthy people.Conclusion1. The prevalence rate of MS increased with age, with males higher than females in the enterprise. The rate of overweight or obesity, and dyslipidemia was significantly high for males aged 40-49 years old. The rate of MS related disease(s) increased significantly for females aged 50-59 years old.2. The gathering of MS related disease(s) and MS are risk factors for cardiocerebrovascular disease. Control of MS related disease(s) and MS is effective measures to prevent cardiocerebrovascular disease.
