Hedge is a very important component of the vague language and since Lakoff proposed the concept of hedges in 1972, it has entered into various linguistic fields and captured many scholars'attention and they do research about hedges from a variety of angles. In 1990s, scholars of our country conducted a preliminary study about it and the publication The First Study of Fuzzy Language by Wu Tieping marked the birth of fuzzy linguistics in China. Scholars have done research about vague phenomena in various field of vague linguistics and hedge is one of the most important fields.TV talk show, a mess medium, is an important program in daily life and scholars pay much attention to it by carrying out researches from different perspectives. However, few scholars touch upon studying hedges in TV talk show while English TV talk show is even lacking.The present study chooses the English talk show Dialogue of CCTV-9 as the data resources and mainly analyzes hedges from pragmatic perspective under the theoretical framework of Leech's politeness principle and Brown and Levinson's face theory. First, the paper begins with the research questions, objectives, significance, research method and the introduction of the data resources of the present study. Then, the paper reviews the research fruits of foreign and domestic scholars in recent decades. The definition, classification and functions of hedges as well as the development, patterns and principles of TV talk show are presented clearly and described in detail in this part. In Chapter Three, the theoretical framework of the present paper, i.e. Leech's politeness principle and Brown and Levinson's face theory, are described and illustrated clearly accompanied with specific examples. At the end of this part, similarities and differences between the western face and Chinese face are described. Chapter Four is the main part of the paper. On the basis of Dialogue as the data resources, the specific examples are and it is found that both the hosts and the guests adopt hedges to obey politeness principles and face theory. The present study finds out that, in Dialogue, they both take into account the partners'face as well as the audience's face. In addition, statistics about the frequency of the hedges in Dialogue is given. At last, the author summaries the findings, the limitation of the paper and puts forward suggestions for the further study.The language in Dialogue is a typical communicative pattern and the analysis of which is helpful to understand more about hedges in daily communication. It could improve people's awareness of using hedges in daily life to achieve their communication purpose and to enhance language expression. What's more, doing research of hedges in TV talk show from the pragmatic perspective contributes to a better understanding of the phenomenon of fuzzy language.
