With the development of networks, such as the introduction of fiber optic in transmission network and the emergence of new business on the Internet, the demand for the performance of network equipment microprocessors has been greatly enhanced. Network processor came into being; it is a programmable device which can be used in tasks in network areas, such as packet processing, protocol analysis and routing, etc. As the latest third-generation network processor, the multi-core network processor has strong performances. However, the complexity of its architecture makes development more difficult, so software design for multi-core network processor is in exploration phase.IP forwarding works in layer 3, using the address of each input packet to decide how to forward it; that is to say, forwarding is based on IP addresses. As one of routers'core functions, the performance of IP forwarding is significant for the whole router. In this paper, IP forwarding system is studied and realized on a multi-core processor platform.In the project design process, the concept, function, development and component of network processor are firstly described, and then the advantages of multi-core network processor are introduced. The architecture of P4080 multi-core processor is analyzed, especially on its DPAA. After study on parallel program design for multi-core processor, software system is built for this project; then rules of IP forwarding and QoS theme are studied, which helps the realization of IP forwarding system modules. Finally test environment of the system is constructed and functions of IP forwarding system are verified. Test results show that this system can achieve desired design features with good performance and thus has good application prospects.
