Since the 1990's, there has been extensive research in the area of high performance network architecture among the network community. However, that research commonly depends on the conventional hierarchical networking architecture. Although the networking performance could be further improved, the problems concerned with the inherent limitations of the hierarchical architecture are still difficult to be resolved. To overcome such limitations and improve poor network service efficiency, which is mainly due to the redundant function overlaps between neighbouring layers and complicated hierarchical processes existing in the conventional hierarchical network, by analysing and classifying network services, a novel network architecture called the service unit based network architecture (SUNA) were presented..This project aims to implement the micro-communication element system (MCES), the first network system under the SUNA framework, into the Linux platform. It includes the host and router model implementations of the MCES. At present as a basal prototype, the host model implementation contains the following functions: 1) hosts can correctly send and receive the user datagram protocols (UDP) datagrams through the correct routing paths crossing different networks; 2) it supports various UDP applications; 3) it incorporates a routing table controlled by given parameters; 4) hosts can communicate via either serial or network adapter interfaces. The features of the router model implementation include: 1) correct data package sending, receiving and routing; 2) configurable routing table and routing parameters; 3) ICMP criterion support. Regarding rigid and comprehensive tests, the results show that this implementation has achieved the design goals. This dissertation mainly introduces the implementation methods of simulating the router model of the MCES on PC systems. The first chapter overviews the SUNA. Chapter two shows the reference model of the MCES. Chapter four illustrates the global design in the MCES-based router and chapter five outlines its design details. Then chapter six discusses the testing techniques and the results. Finally chapter seven summarises the whole work.
