Objective: To investigate the effects of the ethanol extracts from Cyathula officinalis Kuan on angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) expression in kidney and blood pressure of spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR).Method: Forty SHRs were randomly divided into five groups: untreated control group, the high, middle, low dosage group of the Cyathula officinalis Kuan, and enalapril group, with eight rats in each group. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) were measured respectively by tail-cuff technique before therapy and two weeks, four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks after therapy, angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) expression in kidney were measured after eight weeks therapy.Result: Eight weeks treatment later, the ethanol extracts from Cyathula officinalis Kuan significantly declined the blood pressure of rats. Compared with that of enalapril, the hypotensive function of high dosage groups had no significant difference. Meanwhile, the high, middle, low dosage group of the Cyathula officinalis Kuan decreased their angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) expression in kidney. Conclusion: The hypotensive function of the ethanol extracts from Cyathula officinalis Kuan may be related to decreasing angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) expression in kidney.
