"Yangsheng", a word typical of Chinese culture, is not only used as a means for people in China to take care of their health, prevent diseases and prolong their life but also embodies the Chinese understanding of life. There isn't an equivalent of"Yangsheng(养生)"in English, but people in the West have their own way of staying healthy as well as their own understanding of life. With a long history, both Yangsheng in China and staying healthy in the West retain their own features respectively, making their great contribution to the promotion of the human health. The thesis shows us the comparison on the concept of Yangsheng between China and the West and the probe into the similarities and differences caused by history and culture about the concept of Yangsheng in China and the West by making a survey of the Yangsheng concept in China and America and sorting out some documents relevant to it in China and the West.The first part is about a survey and study of the concept of Yangsheng in China and the West. In 2002 and 2003, there were 200 people interviewed in Xicheng district in Beijing, among whom 97.5% people laid stress on mood and spirit, 83.5% people on physical exercises and 50% people on food. The survey in America in 2005 indicated that there were 76.67% people who believed that the key to staying healthy was doing physical exercises, 53.33% people considered that eating healthy and notorious food and keeping a balanced diet led to good health while only 20% people thought health had something to do with one's mind and psychology.The second part is related to the study of documents of Yangsheng in China and the West, including the concepts of staying healthy mentally, keeping fit by doing sports and keeping in good health by eating healthy food in China and the West. They are all based on the well-known documents ( works and dissertations) in China and the West. The concept of Chinese Yangsheng is based on the documents of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Chinese medicine with a focus on the documents of Chinese medicine. The western documents involve Collected Works of Hippocrates, The Bible and modern documents.The third part is about the comparison on the concept of Yangsheng between China and the West, including the comparison on the term"Yangsheng"between China and the West and the comparison on the features of Yangsheng concept between China and the West. The first comparison in this part is about the term"Yangsheng", which in China contains a rich Chinese culture and is a kind of practice and concept of taking care of one's life physically and mentally. In English, there isn't any word completely equivalent to the meaning of Yangsheng in China.
