【Background and objective】:To study the difference of TKl level among patientswith carcinoma of rectum, patients with benign disease and healthy volunteers;Toinvestigate the diagnostic value of serum thymidine kinase 1(TK1)in carcinoma ofrectum.【Methods】:201 cases of patients were selected from the department of generalsurgery in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from 2007 Juneto 2009 Furbery. including 108 cases of Carcinoma of rectum (Carcinoma of rectumgroup , aged 31~78) , 45 cases of benign disease (benign disease group , aged25~67)and 48 cases of healthy controls(healthy control group, aged 28~73), each ofwhose serum samples were collected. All serum sample were stored in -20℃.Theserum level of TK1 was determined by enhanced chemiluminescence assay(ECLA) in108 patients with carcinoma of rectum(group A),45 cases with benign disease(groupB) and normal controls(group C). SPSS 11.5 software was used to analyse the data,The difference between every two groups was analysed by Kruskal-wallis test. Ratecompared was analysed by chi-square test.【Results】:The level of TK1 was [2.45((1.27~3.85)pmol/L] in group A, which wassignificantly higher than [1.25(0.76~1.45)pmol/L] in group B or than[1.16(0.69~1.38)pmol/L] in group C(P<0.01). There was no significant difference inserum TK1 between group B and group C(P>0.05). There Was significant differencein the positive rate of TKl between patients with colon cancer and patients withbenign disease and healthy volunteers [61.1 % (66/42) vs 15.6 % (7/38) vs 16.7%(8/40),P<0.05].【Conclusions】:The concentration of TK 1 was significantly high in patients withCarcinoma of rectum , but kept low in patients with benign disease and healthypeople. So TK 1 Can be a good marker for diagnosing Carcinoma of rectum and forscreening Carcinoma of rectum in healthy people.
