Since reform and opening up, china's manufacturing industry has made a great progress, and china is now the "workshop of the world". With the high growth of output, weather China's manufacturing industry's productivity developed in-phase? And how these industry sectors'productivity grew in contrast with the same U.S. sectors? These are questions that deserve our special attention.Using DEA-based Malmquist index approach, this article measured each of China and U.S. manufacturing sector's total productivity change, technical efficiency change and technological progress. The results show that:(1) during the 1998-2005 period, china manufacturing industries' output is getting closer and closer to U.S manufacturing industries', which is based on the develop of productivity; (2) the growth of every china manufacturing sector's productivity is mainly the result of technological progress; (3) There is plenty of room for improvement of technical efficiency and scale efficiency; (4) Finally we paid attention to the potential growth areas of some manufacturing sectors, together with the growth of outstanding sub-sectors.
