Since digital terrain boards were used in the 1970's, visual simulation and digital terrain brings new challenge and opportunity to radar simulation. Based on digital terrain, it's possible to simulate real radar image of the encounter geometry using radar echo simulation and radar imaging algorithm. And digital terrain can also be used for air-to-ground radar mode simulation in the future. This dissertation addresses the airborne fire control Radar Simulator for flight simulator application. The focus is the virtual digital terrain elevation data simulation for radar mapping and radar imaging modes and 2-D radar landmass scene display. Based on the research of airborne radar landmass circumstance character, 3-D virtual terrain simulation techniques and illumination processing mode, the main content and work finished in this dissertation are as follow:1. Research about a framework for generating of virtual 3-D terrain based on improved fractional Brownian motion model is presented. The suggested scheme leads to a classification of terrain and a multifractal procedure that allows us to obtain the digital terrain elevation data of a virtual 3-D terrain with complex physiognomies.2. Research about the method of generating 2-D radar scene image based on Phong mirror reflection mode and Lambert diffuse reflection mode is explained. Based on this method, scene display about the landmass surrounding of the flight could be provided.3. Research about the radar scattering characters of natures and the method to gain terrain feature analysis data and radar scattering data is explained.4. A radar landmass surrounding database is established. It provides effective manage and accessing to all terrain data for scene display and radar image simulation. All the frameworks presented in this dissertation were built in software approach. And the results indicate that it's a mode by which radar landmass and scene can be generated effectively and conveniently at low cost.
