With the further application of water-soluble polymer in petroleum industry, the real situation of high temperature and high salt-content placed severer requirements on polyacrylamide and its derivatives, the water-soluble polymer now in use in oilfield. Experts of oilfield chemistry are working hard on bettering the performance of polymer agents, developing new polymers which can meet the requirements of nowadays oilfield application. Among these, the most competitive one is hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymer, the hot point in water-soluble polymer field in the world and oilfield chemistry field at home.To meet the requirements of oilfield application, this paper design and synthesized a new kind of cationic hydrophobical monomer 3-dodecoxyl-2-acryoxyltrimethyl ammonium chordle (DATMAC) according to the present materials. The monomer was characterized by infrared absorption spectrum and surface tension measuration. Since the cationic hydrophobical monomer is soluble in water, it copolymer with acrymide and 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic Acid (AMPS) was synthesized radically by copolymerization in aqueous media. The copolymer AM/AMPS/DATMAC (AAD in short) are characterized by the infrared absorption spectrum, its molecular indices measuration and scan electronic microscope (SEM) experiments, and its structure is confirmed. In addition, it was investigated how the properties of polymer solution were affected by the polymer concentration, the hydrophobical monomer concentration, temperature, share rate salt concentration and surfactant concentration. Experiment result show that over the critical association concentration, the polymer solution exhibited conspicuous tolerance of high temperature, high salinty and high share rate. The experiments on copolymer AM/AMPS/DATMAC's inhibition of shale hydration tells its better properties than FA367-(Ⅱ) in the same condition.
