Regional comparative analysis of land use and cover change (Land Use and Land Cover Change,LUCC) was classified as one of the research objectives between 2000 and 2008 by the LUCC workgroup of International Geographical Union. The LUCC group of International Geosphere Biosphere (IGBP) Project emphasized that comparative research of actual cases will greatly intensify the understanding of land cover change which is caused by human driving forces in different geographical and historical background.Changbai Mountain has its unique geology and geomorphology patterns, and is rich in species diversity, but still has certain ecological problems, such as water pollution of Tumen river basin, sharp decrease of virgin forest area, large increase in the kinds of extinct species, aggravation of soil and water lose, etc. These problems are directly reflected in the change of land use, in order to protect the natural resources of Changbai Mountain, we should research its security patterns of land use. Jian City and Hunchun City, located in the south and north slope respectively, become ideal objects for regional comparative research because they have similarities in regional nature background, history and culture, and successive differences in time sequence of economic development.In this paper, utilized remote sensing technology with a combination of landscape ecology as well as statistical analysis methods, gave a systematic analysis and research on changes of land use pattern of Ji'an and Huichun City located in the South and the North slope of Changbai Mountain. First of all, with such GIS software as ArcGIS9.3 and ENVI4.5, extracted two types of land-use data and the spatial pattern of land use information through interpreting TM remote sensing data of Jian City and Huichun City in year 1996 and 2007; Secondly, utilized landscape spatial pattern analysis software package FRAGSTATS3.3, selected typical landscape indices ,analyzed land use spatial pattern of Jian City and Huichun City in different periods, and utilized land use dynamic trend and land-use transfer matrix to compare differences in land-use pattern changes of the two cities; Finally, based on the Jilin Province Statistical Yearbook (1996-2007), used the SPSS software, made comparative study on driving factors of land use pattern changes during 1996-2007.From the results of the analysis, the rates and trends of land-use pattern changes are different.Differences in land use pattern changes has nothing to do with the slope direction.The reason why there are differences in land-use pattern changes of two cities is the main driving factor (economic development, urbanization and technological progress in agriculture) accounted for a leading role in the turn in the study period .
