Ports as transportation link between land and sea play an important role in economy of every country.China has long coastline and drainage basins, rich resources of waterage promote the flourish of ports. While cognizing the important of ports economy in the national economy, the central and local governments are zealously supporting and constructing coastal and river ports.Now, there are 165 ports along the coasline. As our port hinterland economy is not developed, the volume of cargo generated not so much to support the operation and development of the port. Furthermore, there are many world-class ports in the nearby region,which will not only divert our cargo but have geographical advantages in the Pacific maritime transport. So the competitions among our ports or between our ports ports and nearby region are inevitable.We should face competition and comprehend its essential since the competitions exist. How to identify the factors correctly that impact on port logistics competition, how to compare the merits of the ports and how to rationally quantify the level of competition are helpful for the things that understand correctly the competition and oriente stratege correctly. It's also useful to carry on effective competition and cooperation,plan construction of our ports, and lead ports to develop in the way of themselves.In this article, select the eight major ports along China's coast as research objects,use qualitative and quantitative methods to expatiate the importance of port logistics in the socio-economic as well as modern logistics. Analyze the reasons of port competition, the way and significance of competition. Through analyzing operation situation comparatively among the representative port of China's three major ports groups, find out their advantages and disadvantages and compare ourmajor ports under international environment. Put forward the reasonable strategic positioning of our port. By establish the indext system to evaluate the port competition, using SPSS statistical software to carry on clustering analysis and evaluation of the eight major ports on the basis of factor analysis.
