With the rapid development of multimedia video technology, modern video field has a variety of video formats. The popularity of computer and the rapid development of Internet technology, requiring these different formats of video signals can be displayed in modern computer monitor or color television in numerous areas such as home entertainment, education and training, business presentations and video surveillance. This raises a new issue: "multi-format video conversion."Popular Video Converter can only achieve a kind of video format conversion, and its function is single. Some dedicated video switching equipments, which with special collection dedicated processor chip, Private Collection chip, and digital signal processor, have high hardware complexity, high cost, which are not conducive to the promotion. The research of " multi-format video signal conversion system based on FPGA" can convert DVI, HDMI, VGA, S-Video, CVBS and signal from CMOS image sensor to standard analog RGB signals, while achieving progressive interlaced transfer, frame rate upgrade, and resolution transform processing, eventually transferred these signals through VGA interface to the display terminal. The system has flexible interface, small size, and easy extensions, when the input video signal format changes, just modify the corresponding parameters in the module.The system is based on Xilinx Inc.Spartan-3E series FPGA XC3S250E to achieve image processing. DDR SDRAM is the best choice for the frame buffer, which is used in progressive interlaced transfer and frame rate upgrade processing with characteristic of speedy, large capacity and cost-effective. The topic is designed both from hardware and software, and a comprehensive simulation has been done to test results. Firstly, selecting chips and designing the specific circuit from the overall program and conversion type. Then, preparing the logical part of FPGA with Xilinx ISE 9.1i tools, achieving the logic function module design with VHDL, the key codes and the simulated waveforms are show, and the design the of DDR SDRAM controller is also presented.Through this project, we complete the design of multi-format video signal conversion system based on FPGA. In the system verification, we make CMOS image sensor signal as an input to verify the video format conversion.Test results show that the system hardware and software can work well compatibly, the system can resize a normal video format conversion, and achieve the desired design goals.
