With the development of the internet and the digital multimedia technology which was made, new demand has been posted to the development of the data transmission. The image data occupies vast part of band resource in the storage and transmission process, therefore, image compression technology becomes more important than before. FPGA is the ideal platform for realizing image compression. This thesis just specializes in researching the JPEG compression encoding technology of realizing digital image on the platform of FPGA.This paper specifically introduced the designing scheme of video image acquisition and JPEG compression encoding based on FPGA technology. The designing plan uses FPGA chip EP1C6Q240C6 made by Altera company as the central processor, and it accomplishes image acquisition and JPEG encoding compression software, hardware designing by mean of using Verilog HDL language, and realizes the digital image acquisition, memory, DCT transformation, Quantization, Entropy encoding under the environment of Quartusâ…ˇ5.0. Video acquisition part was used for acquiring and memorizing the digital image, and JPEG compression encoding part was used for compressing and encoding to the image transformed by the way of DCT digital image processing. The thesis gives a brief introduction to the principle of video image acquisitions and compressing principle of JPEG image, and completely analyses the acquisition and storage way of realizing video image, and improves the method of calculation of module JPEG realization of the FPGA. Finally, the detailed testing method and results of matlab platform and FPGA development board were applied to the testing session of the thesis.
