With the development of communication and network technology, the Ad Hoc networks are widely researched and used, and the research direction of the Ad Hoc networks are heading towards large-scale network applications. However, the existing Ad Hoc routing protocols are mainly designed for small or medium scale Ad Hoc network applications. If directly applied in large-scale Ad Hoc networks, these protocols are long in path, large in routing protocol overheads and difficult in time delay control. Therefore, it is challenging for designing a routing protocol for large-scaled Ad Hoc network. Based on the existing Ad Hoc network routing protocols, this paper deals with a brand new routing protocol for large-scale Ad Hoc networks, the HSARP (Hybrid Self-Adaptive Routing Protocol), which consists of Active Routing Technology,Reactive Routing Technology and Self-Adaptive Technology, and the HSARP reduces routing overheads and time delay effectively. What's more important, the design and realization of HSARP in OPNET Modeler is introduced emphatically. Finally, HSARP in Ad Hoc networks is simulated, the results of which indicate that the HSARP has advantages over traditional AODV protocol in performance and protocol overheads and it is well adaptive for large-scale Ad Hoc networks. In addition, the physical hierarchical structure Ad Hoc network are introduced and simulated, which shows clear advantages, then a routing protocol framework for the physical hierarchical networks is put forward. Finally, factors, contributed to the performance of the physical properties of layered network, are analyzed and summarized, which provides a base for follow-up research.
