As the core technology of next generation of optical network, ION (Intelligent Optical Network) is supported by a good hardware system, which has good compatibility and scalability, and is equipped with an advanced software system. It changed the static optical transmission layer into a dynamic, intelligent structure of optical switching network, and can directly use the optical domain to rapidly deliver flexible high-speed value-added services. It also forms a data-centric platform to enhance the efficiency of the transmission network. ION is fast developed after combining the optical network technology, which is based on the optical transmission, and IP-based intelligent network technology. The essential of ION is a combination of optical transport network and the intelligence. The aim of ION is to develop the potential optical networks into highly automatic, easily settled, economically effective network, and can directly provide end-to-end services for the entire optical networks. So, how to supply a better QoS and more effective survivability has been become one important topic that needs to be solved without hesitation. The recent researches and development both in China and abroad of the QoS mechanisms have been introduced in this thesis. The QoS mechanisms of different networks are analyzed, such as IP over WDM network, WDM network. Then the QoS mechanism of ION based on GMPLS (General Multiprotocol Label Switching) peer model is studied and simulated after analyzing the traffic engineering of GMPLS peer model and the characteristics of the overlay model and the peer model of ION. Combining with the DOS (Differentiated Optical Services) model of WDM network, a new QoS mechanism of ION is proposed. The better performance of lower time delay and higher utilization of this mechanism is verified by simulation.Secondly, the survivability of ION is studied. The survivability of different networks is analyzed. The protection mechanism, restoration mechanism, and multilayer survivability of ION are emphasized. The key issues and survivability technology of single layer and multilayer networks are developed and summarized. A new multilayer survivability strategy—RLM (Restoration Layer Management) for GMPLS is proposed after studying the multilayer independent and interworking restoration strategy of multilayer survivability, the bottom layer restoration, IP layer restoration, and multilayer restoration. The advantages of smaller blocking probability and good resource utilization are demonstrated by simulation.
