In our country, by the development of industry of vehicle the market of the application of vehicle navigation system is quickly increased. Nowadays, the domestic vehicle Navigation and Positioning Systems are not mature, so these systems do not apply widely. Then, something have to done to improve on technology, to increase the precision and to cut the cost.The vehicle navigation system is comprised of a GPS receiver, a electronic map and a embed system. The system obtains GPS signals, works out the real-time position of the vehicle, and sends the information to Host. Host has a electronic map database, so it can show the vehicle's track.In this paper, the author introduces firstly the basic theory for the vehicle auto-navigation system, then gives the detailed information of the process to make electronic map. In this paper raises a method to achieve the sending and receiving of the data of the GPS through two computers linked through serial port. Combinatorial navigation system analysis is discussed in the paper with the example of a electronic map based on Qingdao City. The data used in the system is gathered by a GPS receiver. These data are disposed to be the basic data of electronic map. On the basis of relevant theoretical research, the whole architecture of the vehicle auto-navigation system is designed, and some software modules of the vehicle auto-navigation system have been realized.
