Wireless Sensor Network, is usually composed of hundreds or thousands of sensors equipped with computation, sensing and communication devices, which are coordinated in a distributed mode in order to collect information on their surroundings. The network features in high mobility, fast deployment and etc., and can be applied to modern battle field, environmental protect, medical treatment and other environments, therefore it has drawn wide attention from the military and the academic. Nevertheless, there are still several problems, such as the ones caused by node mobility, constraint of energy capacitance and computing ability of nodes, completely distributed environment and etc. Up to now, the technology is still in the research period, therefore it's valuable to do research on it.As for the constraint of node energy, besides the improvements on battery technology itself, researchers have proposed modified schemes on the perspective of MAC layer protocols and network layer protocols. This thesis focuses on the environmental monitoring by wireless sensor network. Through proposing a new protocol E-AODV based on AODV and Directed Diffusion routing protocol, we prolong the network service time effectively shown by simulation on NS-2.Chapter 1 of the thesis introduces the background of the research, including the overview of wireless sensor network, characteristics, routing protocols and etc.;Chapter 2 surveys the existing work on the environmental monitoring by wireless sensor network;Chapter 3 illustrates the feasibility, basic principle and algorithms of the E-AODV protocol;Chapter 4 gives out the implementation design of the environmental monitoring system based on E-AODV routing protocol in detail;Chapter 5 simulates it with NS-2 and analyzes the result and we draw our conclusion and image our future work in Chapter 6.
