A journalist has recorded an era. Hu Zhengzhi is an influential journalist and newspaper publisher which has made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese journalism. He has dedicated all his life to the Chinese journalism. When it comes to history of Chinese journalism, Ta Kung Pao is an eternal monument that is admired by people. When it comes to Ta Kung Pao, Hu Zhengzhi is an important figure in history. As a newspaper publisher, he has strong patriotic feeling, advanced thinking, keen vision, and advanced management thought. In the academia, some people even pointed out that"Hu Zhengzhi equals to Ta Kung Pao". It can be said that the outstanding management skills of Hu Zhengzhi have created the newspaper legend of Ta Kung Pao. As an excellent newspaper publisher, his operation and management ideas have made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese journalism, so the study of Hu Zhengzhi's management thought has great significance in the development of modern news media.Hu Zhengzhi had been forgotten for a long time. Since the new century, the historical status and value of Ta Kung Pao have begun to be objectively and fairly valued by people, and the academia has also have a new understanding of Hu Zhengzhi, and the studies of Hu Zhengzhi have also attracted attentions to a certain extent. However, through the review of current academic works and theses, the author has found that rare theses study operating management ideas of Hu Zhengzhi from the perspective of newspaper publisher in the current academia. Moreover, books and theses that study his operating management ideas are mainly simple explorations on the brand characteristics, corporate image and other management measures of Ta Kung Pao from the perspective of newspaper. Relevant books and articles in the current academia help the author have a deeper understanding of Hu Zhengzhi's operating management capabilities, but these books and articles are just generalities, the historical materials are not sufficient, the understanding of his thoughts is not profound, and the essence of Hu Zhengzhi's thoughts is not reflected. Therefore, this thesis not only outlines his thoughts, but also conducts the detailed analysis of the value and meaning conveyed by characteristics of his thoughts. It positions his thoughts, explores the causes of his thoughts, and sums up the points that the modern media can learn from. In the introduction, the author gives a brief introduction to the life of Hu Zhengzhi and studies of his thoughts in the current academia. The main body is divided into three chapters as follows:Chapter One analyzes the main contents of operating management ideas of Hu Zhengzhi, which is mainly divided into four parts. The first part explains his management philosophy of combination of"business and career". In other words, he advocated that newspaper should maintain the business doctrine, but it should be nonprofit, and running a newspaper should be taken as a career. The second part is the analysis of his advanced operating management ideas, namely the management policy and position of independence and freedom of speech stressed by Hu Zhengzhi for newspaper, and his stable HR management thought. They highlight the concept of rule by law in his management ideas and also contain humanistic feelings. The third part is the interpretation of his thought on personnel training. It focuses on the interpretation of his way of making use of personnel. Through his various channels of scouting for talents, his bold appointments of talents, all-directional cultivation of skills of HR mangers and editors, and his HR concepts, such as appointing people on their merit and using talents, have been summed up. The fourth part is the interpretation of Hu Zhengzhi's management philosophy of brand image. In this part, the author explains his brand construction concept from the perspectives of quality, taste, layout, content richness and innovation of newspaper; the brand characteristics are interpreted from aspects, such as the newspaper's trans-regional operation, advertising policy, social activities involved and other management measures. His corporate image philosophy can be summarized as adhering to quality newspaper, participating in social activities, enhancing public credibility and social influence, and creating a distinctive newspaper.Based on the previous interpretation of contents of Hu Zhengzhi's thoughts, Chapter Two summarizes characteristics of his thoughts, analyzes the causes of his thoughts. As an intellectual who deeply influenced by both traditional Chinese culture and Western culture, Hu Zhengzhi's management thoughts inherited traditional mind of"scholars comment on politics", meanwhile he also absorbed advanced Western thoughts. The comparison between him and newspaper publishers in the same period is conducted. Meanwhile, it demonstrates the democracy and rule of law in his thoughts, and the return of journalism selfish departmentalism. It also reflects the spirit of journalism professionalism and his pursuit of news liberalism. The formation of his thoughts has subjective, objective, historical and actual factors. He was influenced by Confucianism when he was a child. Then, he studied in Japan. His experience in the newspaper activities and studies in various Western countries have made his thoughts become increasingly mature. Many factors have provided the formation of his thoughts with a possibility, such as the social thought of"scholars comment on politics"at that time, the domestic political and economic status, and the development background of Western newspapers when he studied in Japan and USA.Chapter Three mainly discusses the value and meaning of Hu Zhengzhi's operating management ideas. Firstly, it confirms that he has successfully learned from and utilized Western ideas to run a newspaper through combining with the actual situations of development of Chinese journalism. Secondly, it fairly evaluates advanced ideas in his thoughts, namely the spirit that he took the idea of news"liberalism"as a life goal. To some extent, he was beyond limitations of the times and showed a ray of lofty professionalism of journalism. Finally, through the interpretation and understanding of his thoughts, his reference value for modern news media is explored.The conclusion of this thesis summarizes values of Hu Zhengzhi's thoughts, clarifies that the author lays the emphasis on the analysis of enlightenment meaning of his thoughts, and conducts an overall positioning of the role of his thoughts in the development of Ta Kung Pao and Chinese journalism. The unnecessary arguments on political limitations of his thoughts are not carried out, the author only hopes to show the success of his management thoughts and provide a reference for the news media.As a pioneer in the history of Chinese journalism, Hu Zhengzhi represents an era. Through the comparison and analysis, this thesis tries to show operating management ideas of Hu Zhengzhi from different perspectives in order to make a contribution to people to have a profound understanding of Zhengzhi's thought and make objective and comprehensive evaluations on values of his thoughts.
