Conversational Implicature can be generated through violating the four maxims of Cooperative Principle. The Cooperative Principle proposed by Grice is the premise and guarantee for a successful conversation. It demands people's observance to its sub-maxims to reach their personal or social goal in the process of communication in which dialogues are adopted as the main means. However, in real conversation, these maxims are not always observed in talk exchange. Communicators usually blatantly violate a maxim to urge the hearer to search for a meaning which is different from, or in addition to the expressed meaning. In fact, speaker takes advantage of these four maxims to prompt listeners to infer the Conversational Implicature. With the almost 20 years development of Chinese TV talk show, it has already been a popular entertainment program. Chapter Three introduces the definition, characteristics, the process of development and premier linguistic research of talk show. The thesis studies communication in talk show programs. The illustrations are classified into different categories in accordence with its violation of each maxims of cooperative principle. In the section of case study, the author lists a series of tactful strategies often used by the host and the guest in the interview to analyze the process of how both sides violate Cooperative Principle and generate Conversational Implicature to avoid the direct confrontation, embarrassment or other negative conseqences.Hopefully, this thesis can help the audience better enjoy and appreciate the Chinese TV interview program, and maintain the stable and harmonious relationship in real human interaction.
