With the rapid growth of the network users and traffic, the problem of network resource lack and network congestion is more and more serious. But new multimedia applications require the network to provide quality of service guarantees. So traffic engineering is proposed. Its purposes are to minimize the congestion and improve the network performance through optimizing resource utilization of the existing networks. MPLS has been regarded as a powerful tool to traffic engineering. In this paper, we study the traffic engineering in MPLS and emphasize on the routing problem. And we apply the traffic engineering routing thought to Ad hoc network. This paper surveys the research status quo of traffic engineering and reviews its history thoroughly. It investigates the limitations of traditional methods and analyzes the advantages of MPLS to traffic engineering. It researches a kind of MPLS traffic engineering model and introduces the components of MPLS traffic engineering: an enhanced link state IGP, constraint-based routing, and the LSP signaling protocol. This paper takes into consideration QoS requirements and traffic engineering objectives based on studying the constraint-based routing deeply. It researches a genetic algorithm for multiple constraints routing to optimize network resource utilization. This algorithm not only satisfies the bandwidth and delay requirements, but also aims to consume less resource and balance the load distribution. Simulation results show its good performance. This paper proposes a Minimize Maximum Link Utilization and Hops(MMLUH) algorithm. The MMLUH modifies the Dijkstra algorithm during path searching period, which replaces finding the least cost path with finding the path with minimal bandwidth utilization. The simulation shows the MMLUH algorithm balances load distribution and reduces congestion. This paper applies the traffic engineering routing thought to Ad hoc network for satisfying its QoS. The simulation results show that the arithmetic optimizes network load and improves network average end-to-end delay in Ad hoc network. Finally, the research works are concluded.
