Examples, reflecting the moral request of society, have been commonly used for moral education in primary and middle schools for decades of years. Moral education by setting examples to students has long been planned and carried out according to adults' intention, seldom concerned with students' own opinions on the examples, which tends to result in the inefficiency of moral education.This research is based on investigating and interviewing some of the primary and middle school students in the city of Ningbo to know about what examples are like in their eyes and what qualities the examples have to their mind. On this basis, the researcher analyzes the deficiency of education through examples at the moment so as to provide reference for future moral education in primary and middle schools.In Part One, the researcher analyzes the literatures, modem and ancient, domestic and foreign, to find that in spite of some challenges of the validity of examples, their demonstration effect is obvious, either from the angle of experience or that of theoretical research. Moral education is bound to need examples, but the research on whether the students need examples and what kind of example they accept is insufficient.In Part Two the researcher discovers more problems afterinvestigating and interviewing the students. For instance, although most of the students can accept the examples that their schools set to them, the examples themselves are lack of the spirit of the times and they can't embody the qualities which the new century requires. Students don't agree with their teachers and parents. With their experience widened, they will choose their examples in a much larger scope. Therefore, how to guide and adjust them in a proper way is a problem which moral education is faced with at present.Accordingy, author of this thesis puts forward where the particular stress of education is to be put. In view of the necessity and aim of education through examples, we have long put particular emphasis in junior middle schools and the corresponding research is usually armed at teenagers. But according to this investigation, moral education through examples is more appropriate to be carried out in primary schools. Meanwhile, it needs society, family and school to act with united strength. If the media is made good use of and the education is carried out in different ways, the examples will be accepted more easily. Expectedly, the educational information vested by examples is out-of-date and needs badly to be renewed. Whether their parents, teachers and classmates can become their examples and how harmonious the sentimental relations between the learners and their examples are seem important in primary schools.
