The paper makes a tentative comparison between one of the best drama translations of Hamlet and one of best known movie versions of Hamlet released in 1948 featuring Laurence Olivier and dubbed by Sun Daolin. We have a discussion about similarities and differences between drama and movie languages so that attention could be paid to translation in both ways. Numerous specific examples are given to illustrate the idea that movie translation is a relatively more delicate business compared with drama translation and that our drama translated versions could be used as a reference while we dub and subtitle movies. At the beginning of the thesis, the author makes a background introduction of the materials we have chosen for research. Then, chapter one deals with the common characteristics of drama and movies languages so that some part of the drama translated version could be used directly in movies.Chapter two and three discuss mainly about the unique features of both drama and movie languages, which serves as necessary preparation work for further research in chapter four.Chapter four, as the essential part of the whole thesis, concentrates on how the differences between drama and movie languages affect our translation. It focuses on almost every important aspects in translating a piece of literary work and features how different sentences are translated differently. It provides abundant concrete examples to illustrate that movie translation is not the same as drama translation and necessary skills should be used. Finally, the author restates the point that, having noticed the similarities and differences in drama and movie translations, we can use the former as a reference for movie transition, which is time saving and effective.
