Objective:A study on Human papillomavirus(HPV)and Epstein—Barr virus (EBV) was conducted in China, to provide the theory evidence for prevention and treatment to esophageal carcinoma. The present study also aimed to study the prevalence of HPV and EBV in China, and to clarify whether they play a causative role in esophageal carcinoma or not. Methods:we collected 180 esophageal carcinoma samples and 60 control samples. HPV was detected by polymerase chain reaction using consensus primers for HPV types 16,18,31,33,35,52b and 58 and type 16-specific primers. EBV was detected also by polymerase chain reaction. Fragment ofβ-actin gene was served as the internal controls. The statistical significance of differences in detection rates between groups was assessed using theχ2 test. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS, version 11.5 (SPSS).Results:Fragments ofβ-actin gene, which served as the internal controls, were successfully amplified from all cancer specimens and from all the control samples. HPV was detected in 66.1% of the 180 esophageal carcinoma samples, and HPV type 16 was detected in 33.6% of these 119 esophageal carcinoma samples which positive for HPV. HPV was detected in 11.67% of control group, and the rates in case and control groups differed statistically significantly (χ2=53.489, P=0.000). EBV infection positive rates in case and control groups was 17.8%and 10%, respectively, and there was not statistical difference in these two groups (χ2=2.043, P=0.153)Conclusion:The results indicated clearly the impact of HPV and EBV causing esophageal carcinoma. HPV was likely the pathogen of esophageal carcinoma, but EBV may be an innocent bystander rather than a causative agent in diarrhea.
