Objective:To understand the cognition and attitude to HIV/AIDS and gender consciousness among university students in Yunnan, to analyze the gender differences and influence factors, provide scientific basis for HIV/AIDS health education in university.Methods:Qualitative and quantitative methods. Stratified cluster random sampling methods was used to recruit 1831 students in 2008 and 2006 grade from four universities in Kunming. Quota sampling was used to select student interviewee who had filled in the questionnaire and teacher interviewee in four universities.36 students and 13 teachers accepted the face to face interviewResults:Questionnaires were handed out to 1831 students, and 1765qualified questionnaires were returned. Statistical difference was not found between males and females with score to AIDS related knowledge(t=-1.23, P=0.218).57.3% of participants were apt to pay more attention to HIV-infected people.75.6% of participants attended in HIV/AIDS health education in university. More females participated in HIV/AIDS health education than males(χ2=11.959, P<0.01).26.8% of them were satisfied or very satisfied with the health education.53.0% of participants agreed with premarital sex or did not care attitude, and more female were against premarital sex than males(χ2=246.34, P<0.01).75.9% of participants said they would insist on using condom if having sex, more females would insist on using condom. Males and females both regarded school as an ideal way to acquired AIDS-related knowledges.35.1% of participants knew some agencies for acquiring information about contraception and AIDS testing, more males knew the agencies than females (χ2=8.203, P<0.01). Males and females were consistent to male role expectations, but different in females. Average score to gender consciousness was 45.21±8.359, and females had more modern gender consciousness than boys (t=-16.560, P<0.01). Non-conditional multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that medical schools students, from the town, receiving school health education about AIDS, know the relevant agencies of acquiring AIDS knowledge got higher scoring about AIDS knowledge. Non-conditional multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that lower grade students, from the country, mother with low education level had more modern gender consciousness. Score to gender consciousness and AIDS related knowledge were positively correlated (r= 0.059, P= 0.013).Qualitative survey show that students understand the knowledge of AIDS, but not systematically and comprehensively. The cognition of premarital sex presented diversity. The gender consciousness presented rigid. Teachers supported to carry out AIDS health education in university, but they sill showed there were some difficulties. It is also controversial whether put gender consciousness education into higher education.Conclusion:It is essential to strengthen AIDS health education among university students. Teachers should improve the quality of school health education. The gender should be taken into educational planning, and combined with sexual health education.
