AIDS Prevention And Sexual Health Education Project Evaluation Study Of College Students In Yunnan Province

Background From July2011to July2012, an AIDS prevention and control project entitled "I am the master of my own young life-students HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual health self-education in5universities", granted by German government, was carry out in5universities in Kunming. Kunming Medical University was invited to undertake the external evaluation as the third side. This study is part of the evaluation.Objectives To assess the project design, implementation and outputs of the above-mentioned project, in order to promote the quality of similar projects in the future, and to summarize experiences and to provide suggestions.Methods1. Quantitative study. Questionnaire survey was carried out focusing on the targeted groups, with a comparison between the baseline and post-training surveys.2. Qualitative methods, including literature research, in-depth interviews and group interviews was undertaken. The programme proposal, meeting records, self assessment reports were carefully checked. The in-depth interviews focused on programme managers, trained students and other stakeholders. In addition, in each of the5universities, two group interviews were made for male and female students separately. Written notes of interviewing were utilized as the main data, while voice record, which was made as a result of informed agreement with the interviewees, was used as the double-checks.Result The self-education did make significant differences among the universities students, in terms of knowledge, attitude and behavior in sexuality. Participatory learning and action did mobilize the students in HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual health education; Application of internet built up a platform for HIV/AIDS prevention for university students. Documentation provided useful and detailed information for evaluation, ensured scientific and efficient management. In addition, the collaboration among the5universities, the participation of the college students campus organizations, and NGOs in HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual health education project also have positive effects.Suggestion1. The idea of "I am the master of my own young life" works well with the college students must be scaled up.2. Collaboration among the different universities in HIV/AIDS prevention and health education must be promoted.3. Motivate the active participation of the students, and established a new mode of self-education in sexuality.4. The education in sexuality and HIV/AIDS prevention for university students must highlight the real needs of the students.5. Widely use internet in HIV/AIDS prevention and sexuality education.
