ObjectiveTo investigate quality of life and social support of patients with chronic heart failure in Changzhi, Shanxi, to learn about the information about the level of their quality of life and the situation of their social support, to analyze the relationship between them and their influential factors.MethodsA descriptive, correlative design was employed in this study. 132 patients who were admitted to hospitals were recruited by using random sampling, while 132 healthy people were selected as the control group. Instruments used for data collection consisted of 3 parts: demographic, Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire (MLWHF) and social support rating scale (SSRS) by Shuiyuan Xiao. We utilized SPSS 14.0 to establish databases. Descriptives, Chi square-test, T-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation and multiple linear regression were performed.Results1. The total score of quality of life of the patients with chronic heart failure was 51.64±17.54 in this study and it had significant difference (P<0.01) compared to the healthy people (21.29±13.66). No significant difference was found in this study relating to different gender, occupation, marital status, education, medical fee payment style, residential status, etiology. There was significant difference on different dimension or total score of quality of life about age, income of the family per month, time since diagnosis, times of enrollment admissions and NYHA functional class. The total score was higher relating to quality of life of patients with chronic heart failure about age, times of enrollment admissions, NYHA functional class and their quality of life was poor, while on income of the family per month was just on the contrary. The longer time since diagnosis was, the more serious the symptom of the patient was.2. The total score of social support of the patients with chronic heart failure was 42.11±7.34 in this study and it had significant difference (P<0.01) compared to the healthy people (34.02±6.05). No significant difference was found in this study relating to different education, medical fee payment style, residential status, time since diagnosis, NYHA functional class and etiology. There was significant difference on different dimension or total score of social support about different gender, age, occupation, marital status, income of family per month and times of enrollment admissions. The male patients and the patients who were in high social position obtained higher scores of objective support than the female patients and other occupation cases. The younger the patients were, the higher the scores of their objective support,subjective support and social support were. The married patients obtained the highest scores of objective support, subjective support and social support, while the scores of the unmarried cases were the lowest. The higher income of the family per month of the patients was, the higher score of their objective support was. The times of enrollment admissions of the patients were less and their utility of social support was more.3. Gender, occupation, age, times of enrollment admissions, NYHA functional class were the risk factors for quality of life of patients with chronic heart failure.4. Age, income of family per month, medical fee payment style, occupation were the risk factors for social support of patients with chronic heart failure.5. Quality of life of patients with chronic heart failure is closely correlative with their social support, and r is 0. 767.Conclusions1. The quality of life of patients with chronic heart failure was poorer than that of healthy people.2. The social support of patients with chronic heart failure was in moderate level.3. Gender, occupation, age, times of enrollment admissions and NYHA classification were the risk factors for quality of life of patients with chronic heart failure.4. Age, income of family per month, medical fee payment style and occupation were the risk factors for social support of patients with chronic heart failure.5. Quality of life of patients with chronic heart failure was closely correlative with their social support.
