Objectives:1. To describe the status quo of nurses'caring ability;2. To compare nurses'caring ability among different professional title, different educational background and different department;3. To investigate and analyze some factors associated with nurse's caring ability;4. To put forward training strategies for enhancing nurses'caring ability; to describe and analyze other factors influencing nurses'caring ability and methods to improve caring ability.Subjects and Methods:Subjects: 350 registered nurses were drawn from general medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric, Cancer Center, general ward in a 3-A-Class hospital.Methods: There are three parts in the questionnaire. (A) demographic information such as gender, age, educational background, professional title, department;(B) Caring ability inventory (CAI) designed by Pro.Nkongho; (C) Items regarding the way how nurses get information about caring and how nurses put caring into practice by choice questions. Finally, SPSS software for windows version 13.0 was applied to analyze the data.Results:1. The overall status quo of nurses'caring ability: The gross score on CAI was 184.24±26.56; the score in knowing, courage, patience subscale were73.9±12.40, 55.77±11.03, 58.17±11.20, which were lower than Norms for CAI.2. The condition of different background nurses'caring ability:2.1Nurses'caring ability in different professional title: nurse-in-charge's score (185.93±26.20) was higher than primary nurse's score (184.19±25.60) and nurse's score (183.54±27.45) with statistical difference. 2.2 Nurses'caring ability in different academic level: CAI score of nurses with master degree (201.56±26.20) was higher than CAI score of nurses with bachelor degree (185.26±26.15), CAI score of nurses with nursing diploma (180.36±27.92) and CAI score of nurses with nursing certificate (182.19±25.91) with statistical difference.2.3 Nurses'caring ability in different department: nurses'score in Cancer Center(197.42±24.05) was higher than nurses'score in general medical ward (184.97±23.36), nurses'score in surgical ward (174.60±33.21), nurses'score in obstetric ward (188.12±23.59), nurses'score in pediatric ward (179.63±20.29) and nurses'score in universal ward (190.55±23.22) with statistical difference.3. Influencing factors associated with caring ability and methods to improve caring ability.3.1 Nurses'caring ability are affected by working pressure and strength, nurses'culture and diathesis, difference in the caring need among the patients.3.2 Methods to improve caring ability: offering caring related curricula, experiencing caring, practicing caring and modeling.Conclusions:1.The overall status of nurses'caring ability is lower than in the US, so it is necessary to strengthen nurses'caring ability;2.CAI score among different background nurses was statistically different. Nurses-in charge, nurses'scores with degree of master, CAI scores of nurses in Cancer Center were the strongest in care ability among all subjects, which are affected by working experience, culture and communication ability of nurses, working environment.3.Nurses'caring ability is influenced by the atmosphere of learning environment, elder nurses'demonstrations and nurses'culture. The methods to cultivate caring ability were as follows: offering caring related curricula, experiencing caring, practicing caring and modeling in clinical work, which provide the cultivation strategies for enhancing caring ability.
