Objective The study probed into the characteristics of job stressors, personality characteristics,social supports,coping styles and mental health among nursing directors.To explore the relationships of the above factors and to find out the factors which have influence on mental health.Methods 154 nursing directors who sampled from 84 secondary and tertiary hospitals in Hunan Province were investigated by a grade random sampling method from April to July 2007.Six instruments were employed for data collection.Demographic Information Sheet used to collect subject's individual characteristics.Symptom Check List90(SCL -90),the Job Stressors Questionnaire,Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, Social Support Rating Scale and Eyecup-Personality -Questionnaire were applied to evaluate the psychological condition, work related stress,coping strategies,social supports and personality of nursing directors.Descriptive analysis,t-test,multiple linear stepwise regression and Pearson correlation analysis were performed by the SPSS 13.0.Results 1.The mean total score of SCL-90 was 131.12±39.32. Compared with general model,there was a great difference which has statistical significance(P<0.05).The score of psychoticism was higher than general people(P=0.04).The scores of hostility and interpersonal sensitivity were lower than general people(P=0.02,P=0.04).The incidence of mental health of nursing directors was 19.5%.2.The scores of job stressors among nursing directors were low.They were job character,organizational structure,family conflict,career life,working role and interpersonal conflict by descending order.3.The score of positive coping was 2.04±0.45,negative coping was 0.25±0.06.The score of positive coping was higher than general people(P=0.00).The score of negative coping was lower than general people(P=0.00).4.The mean total score of social supports of nursing directors was 42.44±6.41.The score of social supports was higher than general people P=0.00).The mean score of objective supports was 10.04±3.00,using supports was only 8.70±1.70.5.The score of extroversion was 11.10±3.80,psychoticism was 3.75±2.08,neuroticism was 9.87±5.15,and the lie was 15.33±3.11. The scores of extroversion and lie were higher than general people (P=0.00,P=0.00).The scores of neuroticism and psychoticism were lower than general people(P=0.00,P=0.00).6.Negative coping,job stressors and EPQ-P had a positive correlation to SCL-90.EPQ-L had a negative correlation to SCL-90.7.Influential factors of mental health:①The factors influencing total score of SCL-90 were career life and organizational structure.②The factors influencing somatization were EPQ-N and career life.③The factors influencing obsessive-compulsive were organizational structure,objective supports,family conflict and education level.④The factors influencing depression were career life, family conflict and active coping.⑤The factors influencing anxiety were career life and managing years.⑥The factors influencing interpersonal sensitivity were organizational structure,objective supports and EPQ-N.⑦The factors influencing photianxiety was organizational structure.⑧The factors influencing paranoid ideation were organizational structure, managing years and objective supports.⑨The factors influencing psychoticism were organizational structure,managing years and education level.⑩The factors influencing hostility was interpersonal conflict.Conclusion 1.19.5%of the nursing directors existed psychological problems.The score of psychoticism was higher than general people.The scores of hostility and interpersonal sensitivity were lower than general people.2.The scores of job stressors among nursing directors were low. They were job character,organizational structure,family conflict,career life,working role and interpersonal conflict by descending order.3.The significant differences were in mental health,job stressor and coping styles of nursing directors,while there was no difference in social supports.4.Job stressor made directly detrimental impact on mental health.The social supports,personality characteristics and the coping styles worked as mediator between job stressor and mental health.
