Objective To discuss factors which influence early and middle stage breast cancer recurrence and metastasis after mastectomy. Methods The clinical data of breast cancer patients who underwent treatment in our hospital from 1995 to 2005 was collected, complete the follow-up of 354 cases by telephone and out-patient review, after choosing the cases which after mastectomy, tumor size less than 3 cm in diameter, axillary lymph node metastasis less than 3 and had no distant metastasis when first treated, get 125 cases with recurrence and metastasis occurred and 94 cases of disease-free survival ,a total of 219 cases for analysis .Results Breast cancer metastasis and recurrence always occurred in the first 1~3 years after mastectomy. Metastasis and recurrence rate of 3 and 5 years is 32.4% and 44.3% respectively. Age, tumor location, hormone receptor status have no significant difference. Menstrual status, tumor pathological type, adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant radiotherapy and adjuvant endocrine therapy have significant difference. Conclusion Menstrual status, tumor pathological type, adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant radiotherapy, especially in patients with axillary lymph node positive, and adjuvant endocrine therapy in patients with ER positive are the influencing factors of metastasis and recurrence.
