This dissertation describes the chemical studies of Veratrum nigrum Linn., especially the bio-assay guided isolation of anti-tumor compounds, and the chemical investigation of Veratrum nigrum Linn. From the titled plants, 32 compounds in total have been obtained and established, including 2 new compounds and 11 compounds isolated for the first time.On the basis of test for toxicity, The LD50 of the fraction and pure compounds isolated from Veratrum nigrum Linn. were studied. Results indicated that the chloroform extract fraction and ceveratrum group alkaloids are the toxic constituents of Veratrum nigrum Linn. The chemical profiles of cevanine type steriodal alkaloids in Veratrum nigrum Linn. were identified by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS). Their fragmentation patterns were well matched with their chemical structures. Based on 34 compounds with the type of cevanine steriod alkaloids were elucidated by the the MS and MSn spectra.
